In Austria, the average retirement age is between 57 and 59 years. Many newly retired older people look for adequate activities like volunteering, sports, or educational services for quite a long time until they find something suitable.

With the programme "Adventure: Retirement" the City of Vienna is financing a new opportunity for retired older people to connect with each other and to engage in sports and outdoor activities. Together with two local associations (Wiener Volkshochschulen and Nachbarschaftszentren des Wiener Hilfswerks) newly retired people who are looking for an opportunity to connect, are offered workshops with people of the same age to interact, connect and make new plans for retirement.

The University of Vienna offers evaluation, monitoring and guidance for this programme in order to find out, how older people are best possibly targeted to such programmes and how workshops should be implemented to guarantee group cohesion and sustainability.
