Module 1 - Introduction to Sustainable Development (6 ECTS)

Aims of the module:

Topics covered in the course include in particular:

  1. A short political history of sustainable development (precursors, the Brundtland Commission, the Rio process et.c)
  2. Concepts and theories of sustainable development (incl. the economic, social and ecological dimension), related concepts like green economy or social-ecological transformation
  3. The significance of sustainable development within the contemporary global political economy
  4. The UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goal

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion, students…

  • have acquired a basic understanding of fundamental concepts and theories of sustainable development – and related concepts - and are able to apply these to the analysis of sustainability issues
  • are able to comparatively assess the development policies of individual countries against the exigencies of sustainable development
  • have acquired a detailed knowledge of the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and are able to critically assess its strengths and weaknesses
  • are able to apply the Sustainable Development Goals to an analysis of the sustainable development trajectories of particular countries
