Manfred Nowak, the Scientific Director of the Vienna Master of Arts in Human Rights, founded the programme in 2012, and teaches regularly in the programme in a variety of human rights topics, e.g. the international human rights protection, prohibition of torture, and corporate social responsibility. He serves as professor of international law and human rights at the University of Vienna, and is a co-founder and co-director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights. Manfred was one of the judges of the Human Rights Chamber for Bosnia and Herzegovina between March 1996 and December 2003. From 2004 to 2010 Manfred was appointed the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture. Other UN involvement includes e.g. serving as expert on disappearances. Manfred is a holder of many prestigious human rights awards, such as Otto Hahn Peace Medal and the UNESCO Price for the Teaching of Human Rights.

Manfred Nowak


Marijana Grandits

Marijana Grandits is the Academic Coordinator of our programme. She has a wide international experience of human rights work and an immense network of contacts, especially to Kosovo, where the new students of our programme travel each year for a field trip. Marijana was political adviser for the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, and from 1990 to 1994 she was a member of the Austrian Parliament. Besides her expertise of Balkans, Marijana has been involved in gender equality issues for decades. In 2010, she was senior co-ordinator of AIDS2010 conference. Marijana was awarded the prestigious Bruno Kreisky Prize for Services to Human Rights in 2015.

Vedran Dzihic is a senior researcher at the oiip (Austrian Institute for International Affairs) and lecturer at the University of Vienna. Vedran’s field of research is related to democracy and transition processes, foreign policy, and nationalism with regional focus on Eastern and Southeastern Europe, and the USA. His classes in the programme address human rights issues from the perspective of political science and foreign policy.

Vedran Dzihic


Walter Suntinger

Walter Suntinger is a human rights consultant and trainer. His speciality is the practical application of human rights in a variety of contexts. Through his training and consulting work, Walter has a wide array of experience in e.g. detention monitoring and human rights training in the police and the criminal justice system. In his classes, Walter introduces the new human rights students to the interdisciplinarity of human rights studies, and later on in the programme enhances their practical skills.

Nenad Sebek has over four decades of experience in the field of journalism. He worked for the BBC World Service in the 1990s covering the Balkans and Russia. Currently he is the Spokesperson for the Regional Cooperation Council. Prior to that, he was the Executive Director of the Center for Democracy and Reconciliation in Southeast Europe. In Vienna Master of Arts in Human Rights Nenad provides his experienced journalistic insight into the world of human rights by giving lectures on media and human rights, and also teaching practical human rights skills.

Nenad Sebek


Katrin Wladasch

Katrin Wladasch is a senior researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights in Vienna with a focus on anti-discrimination, equality and access to justice. She has been a founding board member of ZARA (Zivilcourage und Anti-Rassismus-Arbeit), an NGO active against racism, and is a board member of the Litigation Association of NGOs against discrimination (Klagsverband). Katrin is the main lecturer in the thematic cluster in the second semester focusing on anti-discrimination.

Elisabeth Kübler-Berghammer is the Division Manager for Markets and Acquisition at FIBAA (Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation), a leading international agency for higher education accreditation based in Bonn. She is furthermore an experienced lecturer in social science research methods and academic writing. In her previous career at an Austrian university of applied sciences, Elisabeth has co-designed research modules for all degree programmes and oversaw numerous strategic internationalization projects. Elisabeth Kübler-Berghammer holds a doctoral degree in Political Science from the University of Vienna and an MSc in European Studies: Ideas and Identities from the London School of Economics. She plans to graduate shortly from a part-time MBA in Higher Education Management at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences.
