On June 24, 2025, honorary doctorates were awarded to two renowned international law scholars by the Rector of the University of Vienna, Sebastian Schütze, and the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Brigitta Zöchling-Jud.
Andrea K. Bjorklund, Professor of International Arbitration and International Commercial Law at McGill University, has been highly regarded for many years as an arbitration expert and as editor of the Arbitration International series and the Journal of International Dispute Settlement for the investment sector. From her time as a visiting professor at the Department of Public International Law, she is particularly well known to students of the LL.M. program "International Law" from 2016-2018.
The honorary doctorate was awarded to her for her outstanding academic achievements in the field of international commercial law and international dispute resolution.
At the ceremony, her contribution, delivered in English, was on the topic of "The Resilience of International Law".
Anne Peters, former university professor at the University of Basel and current director at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, received an honorary doctorate for "her pioneering contributions to questions of the constitutionalization of international law, human and animal rights and global governance."
Her lecture was on the topic of "Double standards in international law".
